New Exhibit at Rio Gallery: “Admission”

November 19th, 2009

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Division of Arts and Museums presents “Admission,” the newest exhibit coming to the Rio Gallery from December 4, 2009 through January 7, 2010. The Gallery will host an opening reception Friday, December 4th from 6-9 p.m. in conjunction with Salt Lake City’s Gallery Stroll.

Chris Purdie and Marc Bradley Johnson are two artists, using two cubes, over two hundred speakers, and twelve doors to create large, interactive sculptures in “Admission.”

“We’re excited to show the unique concept of these two Utah artists,” said Margaret Hunt, Director of the Utah Division of Arts and Museums. “This exhibit will really engage people and highlight the art of sound and motion.”

Purdie’s sculpture is a six-foot cube constructed by stacking over two hundred functioning speakers to represent thought or voice. Johnson’s sculpture is a seven-foot cube constructed of twelve functioning doors to demonstrate access to possibilities or options. The audience is invited to interact with these sculptures by listening to the speakers and by walking in and out of the doors.

“It’s fun, it’s entertaining, but it also has a tie to art history and philosophy,” said Purdie.

“This is art that you actually get to touch and be a part of,” said Johnson.

The Rio Gallery is located in the historic Rio Grande Depot at 300 South 455 West in Salt Lake City. Gallery hours are 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday. For more information about the Rio Gallery and the exhibit, contact Laura Durham at ldurham@utah.gov or (801) 533-3582.
